EMOTIONAL FITNESS CENTERS OF TENNESSEE

It's being called…A DREAM WHOSE TIME HAS COME!

After much work and collaboration...EMOTIONAL FITNESS CENTERS OF TENNESSEE are in operation in Shelby County!

You are cordially invited to attend a special moment for the faith community in Shelby County. A new appropriation sponsored by Representative Gary Rowe allows a pilot project by churches in Shelby County promoting and de-stigmatizing the need and use of Mental Health Services. The presentation will be made at The Healing Center, 3885 Tchulahoma Rd., Memphis, Tennessee 38118, at 9:30 AM, Monday, March 10, 2008. Commissioner Ginna Trotter Betts, Department of Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities and local officials will be present to make the presentation.

This pilot program allows mental health services to be improved and given greater access by individuals dealing with emotional distress and mental health issues. This project targets, but is not limited to, the African American community where services are under-utilized. The goal of this program is to de-stigmatize the need for mental health services and make caring for one's self emotionally as important as caring for one's self physically by the union of the church and mental health professionals.

Six local churches have teamed up to domicile EMOTIONAL FITNESS CENTERS in their facilities. Individuals in the community can go to these churches get Emotional Fitness Screenings, a physical if needed or desired and get a referral for counseling and/or further medical services. Each site has PALs or Peer Advocate Liaisons, soon to be Certified Peer Specialist, who will administer the initial screening. The client will then be given a Physical Screening if warranted or desired. The Emotional Screening Instrument will be reviewed by a Licensed Professional Counselor and referrals or recommendations will then be made. The client will also be referred for further services physically as warranted.

The PAL will insure client receives the services they need and journey with them navigating the Care Systems to assure they receive needed care. Clients will be reminded of appointments, encouraged to continue their journey to wholeness and assisted in acquiring other services that will enhance their total health.
